What an honor to be featured today on RUE Daily! The curation of projects found on their website and in their print magazine have always been inspirational to me, so I hope you also enjoy exploring that resource. In this post we’ll get further into some of the details for this recent primary bedroom transformation.
Project Brief
The interior of our wonderful clients’ new Ponte Vedra Beach home was mainly builder grade and lacked the personality they desired, as is the case in many developer-built homes. We, of course, LOVE an opportunity to turn a generic room into a space that truly reflects our clients’ lifestyle and aspirations and introduce that missing element of luxury.
Here’s where we started (our clients knew they wanted to work with a designer so all of this furniture was temporary from their former home):
Before Photos
Floor plan / layout
As in any design project, one of the first steps was to nail down the furniture layout. The room was a nice large size and we were able to round out the room with some added amenities like a cozy, light-filled reading corner and large floor mirror. Properly scaled furniture and rugs were the key to balancing the room’s large proportions.
Design Concept
Instinctively, we wanted the bedroom design to evoke the sophistication and comfort of a boutique hotel suite (maybe because I secretly would love to design a boutique hotel?). The goal was to create a moody retreat balanced with practical functionality—a space to escape the chaos of daily life while accommodating the realities of parenting (both kids and a dog that all very much love to be in the bed!).
To achieve this, the concept was to blend elevated design elements with thoughtful practicality. A high impact, low-cost way to make a statement is with paint selection. After sampling many options, we rallied around Benjamin Moore’s Meadow Pink—a blush hue, carefully chosen with brown undertones to avoid an overly “pink” appearance. This bold neutral set the tone for the room.
Design Development (+ 3D Modeling)
Meticulously designed picture frame moldings were introduced to accentuate the symmetry of the layout and add architectural detail, breaking up the large span of blank wall. Extra wide nightstands, coordinated with the wall molding placement, further balanced the proportions of the main wall—and it’s always a bonus when you can provide extra convenience with integrated tech for charging devices!
To address the awkward octagonal tray ceiling that builders seem to love so very much, we proposed squaring off the corners and adding wood paneling and beams to create warmth and architectural detail. This portion of the project will be implemented in a future phase! We love to model in 3D to explore and refine our design intent—it enables us to push the envelope and easily illustrate the vision for our clients as well. Now this ceiling feature appears considered and intentional… we are obsessed!
Lighting + Window Treatments
Lighting and window treatments were key to achieving this boutique hotel-inspired bedroom design. Oversized pleated linen pendants from a Danish Etsy shop became a standout feature, enhancing the high ceilings while adding texture and soft ambient lighting. Brass European-style dimmers on either side of the bed and motorized blackout shades provide that extra layer of hotel-like luxury. The wall-to-wall linen draperies disguise the undersized, off-center window while adding softness, acoustic value and the perfect amount of drama.
Finishes, Bedding, and Accessories
Drawing inspiration from natural textures and coastal beauty—a consistent theme at JGD—tonal woods, metals, colorful textiles, and patterns were layered into the design to create depth and visual interest. The bedding features moss-green linens paired with a chambray blue duvet for a casual yet refined feel (and all easily washable!). Richer fabrics like velvet and boucle add an elevated feel through upholstered accent pieces. Custom pillows and Katie Gong’s iconic squiggle wall art introduced graphic elements into the design.
How cute is that custom bolster pillow? Playing with different materials in the accessories (leather, ceramic, marble, shagreen…) allowed us to give the room a collected, finished feel. Fun fact, the client DIY’d this art based on the inspiration we provided. We love how it turned out! Share your thoughts on this transformation in the comments below!
